         The war was on then, but I didn’t know.  Europe’s war, where the guns were silent but the agony screamed on eternally.  A war between a German and a Jew.  Not a second war, the same war, where the battles first broke out over lack of money and ambition versus indifference.  But there was a darker force beneath this surface conflict, a secret venom underlying the skirmishes like the smoke of crematoria chimneys, hidden away in Poland, were barely noticed amidst the dark pall pouring from Europe’s flaming cities.
